Fresh off the worldwide blockbuster success of summer 2024’s funniest comedy, Despicable Me 4, Illumination expands its joyful animated universe with a riotous new chapter, featuring all-new characters, in the biggest global animated franchise in history: Minions & Monsters.
This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.
Keyboardist Ben Model returns
to accompany Buster Keaton
silent film on July 7!
July 7 at 7PM
$15/Ticket at the door
We are excited to welcome back renowned keyboardist Ben Model to perform live accompaniment to the silent film Steamboat Bill, Jr., a hilarious Buster Keaton comedy. Model’s appearance is again in partnership with the Strand Theater in Schroon Lake.
Ben Model is one of the nation’s leading silent film accompanists, performing on both piano and theatre organ. Over the past 44 years, he has created and performed thousands of live scores for silent films at universities, museums, and historic theaters, and is one of the few exponents of this craft who is working at it full-time. Ben is a resident film accompanist at the Museum of Modern Art (NY) and at the Library of Congress’ Packard Campus Theatre, and he accompanies silents at classic film festivals around the USA and internationally.
In Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928), Buster Keaton plays the son of a riverboat captain (Ernest Torrence) who comes home from college to help run the family business. As luck would have it, his girlfriend from school (Marion Byron) also has a father with a steamboat, who is trying to put Steamboat Bill, Sr. out of business. In the film 's climax, Buster faces a windstorm to save his father and his boat and win the heart of his girl. The film is known for what might be considered Keaton's most famous film stunt: the facade of an entire house falls on top of him while he stands in the perfect spot to pass through the open attic window instead of being flattened. In 2016, the film was added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress and runs 70 minutes.
"There's so much more to why Keaton's Steamboat Bill, Jr. is a fan-favorite than the stunt where the house falls on Buster,” says Model. “Marion Byron as his love interest and Ernest Torrence as his father bring more depth to these roles than actors in these same roles do in any of Keaton's other films. In this picture, we root for Buster not just because of athleticism and gags but because we really care about his relationship with 'the girl' and his father."
